Va. Youth Anti-Smoking Groups Get Funding

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth is awarding grants to 22 youth organizations across the state to start or support chapters of its teen volunteer group.

The foundation says the groups will share $44,000 to support the chapters of Y Street, which promotes healthy, tobacco-free lifestyles for youth.

Y Street was named the top youth advocacy group for tobacco-use prevention in the nation in 2011 by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids.

Each grant recipient will host a training event in their community for at least 25 teens and one adult coordinator to become a working Y Street chapter.

The program added 869 new teen members in 2012. They collectively completed nearly 1,000 projects and volunteered more than 2,000 hours.
