DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials say fewer than 1,000 residents have enrolled in the state's new health insurance exchange, but the enrollment process is becoming smoother.

Health and Social Secretary Rita Landgraf said Monday that 793 Delawareans had chosen an insurance plan under the federal Affordable Care Act as of Dec. 12 and paid the first month's premium. That's up from federal officials' report last week of 431 enrollees by Nov. 30.

Landgraf told the state health care commission that the changes show positive momentum in Delaware's enrollment process.

But the number of enrollees represents less than 2.5 percent of the 35,000 Delawareans that state officials hope to enroll.

The enrollment period lasts through March, but people need to enroll within the next week for coverage effective Jan. 1.
