Del. Task Force Looks to Curb Pedestrian Accidents on Route 1

Posted:

REHOBOTH BEACH, De. - A task force on pedestrian safety kicked off Monday evening at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, in order to discuss possible measures to keep people safe between Nassau Bridge and Dewey Beach on Route 1. This area, has been one of the main areas for pedestrian accidents in Delaware, and the task force hoped to find solutions.

The meeting was at 6:00 pm, and was open to the public. Nicole Reynolds did not attend the meeting, but said she noticed this problem along Route One. She works at Buffalo Wild Wings, and looked out at Coastal Highway Monday afternoon.

"People cross the road all the time," she said pointing at the road. "They just fly by. I don't understand it. It's dangerous."

The attention on this section of the highway follows countless accidents in the area, including at least five fatalities on these roads. State Representative Peter Schwartzkopf is the person who called for the task force. He lives a couple streets away from Route One and said he has seen the dangers first hand.

"We have created this monster out here," he said referring to the highway. "We have put stores on both sides of the highway and I guess encouraged people to walk between the stores. Which is a very bad thing. It's a 10-lane highway, including the turn-lanes and everything."

The focus of the task force is meant to be between Nassau Beach in Lewes all the way down to the border between Dewey and Rehoboth Beach. Members of the task force discussed various policies, regarding changes to lighting, street lights, sidewalk advancements, as well as many others. But Reynolds said more responsibility needs to be given to the pedestrians who are walking dangerously.

"Just walk farther," she said, referring to the pedestrians. "Go to the cross-walk. Don't play frogger. Don't play frogger."
