Monday is Extremely Busy Day at Post Office

Posted:

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - Monday was the busiest shipping and mailing day of the year in America.

UPS was delivering 300 packages per second and picking up about 34 million packages. Some 29 million of those will reach their destination by Tuesday.

The US Postal Service estimated more than six million customers visited post offices nationwide.

Terry Hurley little by little moved two large boxes through the line at the Dover post office around noon Monday.

"I came to the post office to mail out Christmas gifts to Colorado and New York," he said.

It was a long line, but it was moving.

"Actually a lot quicker than I thought I was going to. I thought I was going to be here for 30-45 minutes. I think my whole time in line was less than 17."

His packages were just two of 600 million pieces of mail the USPS expected nationally Monday.

"We expect this holiday rush," said LaShawn Jones, postmaster at the Dover post office.

Jones has two decades of post office Christmases under his belt.

"We prepare for this. We schedule properly. We have all our windows staffed to make sure we handle our customers. Then we have a lobby director. And we have supervisors out in the front lobby to make sure we're getting our customers served in an appropriate time."

Jones says next Monday will be hectic, too. But Hurley won't have to worry about running into that.

"[That was] all of my shipping for this season," he said. "Now I can focus on decorating the house and wrapping all the gifts for people staying at home."

Friday is the last day to send first class cards and letters for them to arrive by Christmas. Monday, Dec. 23, is the final time to send priority mail for a pre-Christmas arrival.

Also, police in Delaware are investigating several incidents of packages being delivered to homes and stolen.

Officers say if you're home, always bring in your packages as soon as they arrive.

If you won't be home, consider having the package held for pick-up or having a neighbor pick it up for you. And use a service that offers tracking of your packages.
