Enrollment Deadline Looms for Maryland Health Exchange

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- The deadline for insurance sign-ups is Dec. 23 if you want to be covered starting Jan. 1, so Maryland Health officials are working to get more people enrolled in the health exchange.

Dominic Snowden is one of the people trying but not seeing immediate success.

"It's kind of hickey right now because everything is starting up with the new Affordable Care Act so mostly now I'm just getting a username and password," he said.

Snowden tried to sign up at Peninsula Pharmacy in Salisbury, but after getting a username and password, he was locked out of the site.

"It's the government so you can't really be too sure anything's gonna work for them, so it's not like I'm surprised, it just is what it is," Snowden said.

Rob Dekoter was having more to like at Peninsula Pharmacy Monday afternoon.

"We created an account, answered all the questions which was an awful lot, well I'll discuss the results with my wife and then we'll pick a plan," he said.

It took Dekoter nearly an hour to create an account, but he thinks the time spent is worth it.

"In our case it probably saves money, it provides healthcare for everyone which I think is a good plan," Dekoter said.

And despite the difficulties, Snowden is confident in the Affordable Care Act.

"I just would like to have health care that's affordable for me and take care of me," he said.

To set up an appointment with the Lower Shore Health Insurance Assistance Program to discuss signing up for health insurance, call 855-445-5540.
