Proposal for Right to Work Zones in Delaware

Posted:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Republican lawmakers are proposing legislation to allow local right-to-work zones in Delaware, a state controlled by Democrats with strong union ties.

GOP lawmakers said Thursday that the zones could help boost job creation in targeted areas, like the former General Motors plant near Newport.

Nationwide, proponents argue that right-to-work laws can help boost job creation in states facing economic struggles.

Twenty-four states already have right-to-work laws that prohibit making union fees a condition of employment, with Indiana and Michigan joining their ranks last year. Delaware GOP officials say right-to-work bills were introduced in 21 other states and the District of Columbia this year.

The legislation that led to Michigan's right-to-work law started out as a bill allowing local governments to establish right-to-work zones, similar to what Delaware Republicans are proposing.
