DOVER, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell says Delaware is making progress in improving early childhood education, particularly for low-income children.

Markell said Thursday that in the past three years, the proportion of low-income kids in high-quality early learning programs has grown from one in 20 to one in three.

Delaware also has increased the reimbursement rate for providers serving low-income children.

In 2011, Delaware was among nine states selected to share $500 million in federal funding to improve early childhood programs, with Delaware requesting just under $50 million.

On Thursday, federal officials announced that six more states will receive a combined $280 million in Race to the Top early learning grants.

That brings the number of states to receive such federal funding to 20.
