Mayor of Wilmington Calls First Year Challenging

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams says in a radio appearance that his first year in office was often challenging but that he's learned he "can't run the city like I run the state."

Williams said on WDEL-AM that he's looking forward to working with the City Council in 2014 and wants to make improvements to Wilmington.

As mayor, Williams fought with the Council on the budget and publicly raised the idea of a police department shakeup amid continued violence in the city.

Before becoming mayor, Williams served in the General Assembly and chaired the House Appropriations Committee and the Joint Finance Committee.

He says being mayor is different, in part because he's now the person who has to make final decisions instead of being surrounded by fellow legislators.
