Governors Challenge brings more than basketball fans to area

SALISBURY, MD- The Governors Challenge is back in action and bringing countless people to Wicomico County. It's a holiday tournament basketball fans usually cannot wait for. But what many don't realize is that it's not just great for fans of the sport. The event has an economic impact on the area.

"Mom and dad are coming to see their kids play and they're eating in restaurants. They're staying in our hotels and they're making an impact," said James Simmons, Tournament Director for the Governors Challenge. "I think you'll definitely see that this year."

There are 35 high school boys' basketball teams from across the region making their way to Salisbury. Out of the 35 teams, 14 of them are staying in Salisbury during the course of the three days of the tournament.

It's not even just the players that will be bringing money into the area, but their family and friends coming out to support them as well.

Since the tournament began Thursday afternoon and numbers are not in, Simmons expects this year to bring in around $200,000 into the city of Salisbury.
