Police Say Beware of Christmas Trash

SALISBURY, Md. - Police warn residents that by looking at your trash the day after Christmas, criminals can see what presents you have in the house. If you don't hide your trash, you can make a robber's job a lot easier.

According to Fruitland Police Chief Michael J. Phillips, it is important year round to put your trash in black trash bags so outsiders can't see what kinds of things you are throwing out. During the holidays, he said since people go out of town, it is even more crucial to conceal your garbage.
"You want to make sure the contents of your trash is protected," Phillips said.  "It's not visually obvious to a passerby or you might have a particular present or a new purchase that would be of great value to kinda key in a criminal."

Pocomoke resident Sheila Nelson thought ahead and put all of her garbage in black bags as well as the dumpster to avoid a breaking and entering in her home. "It does happen and it's sad," she said. "This is a time to be happy and families joining together and distractions such as that, that's pretty bad." So keep this in mind when you're putting out your Christmas trash.
