BALTIMORE (AP) - Members of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association are planning to discuss how money from slot machine gambling has helped make the industry more competitive in the state.

They have scheduled a news conference in Baltimore on Friday.

They plan to talk about the Maryland-Bred Awards Program, which is funded by slot machine proceeds, has boosted local breeding, selling and racing by making Maryland more competitive.

Maryland dedicates 7 percent of the revenue raised from slot machine gambling to horse racing purses. As of November, that added up to more than $36 million for the calendar year. Another 2.5 percent of slot machine revenue is set aside for capital improvements at race tracks. As of November, more than $9 million had been raised for capital improvements.
