PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Hampton Roads motorists have about five weeks to open an E-ZPass account before tolls begin on two tunnels.
Tolls on the Downtown and Midtown tunnels begin Feb. 1. Motorists who don't have an E-ZPass account will receive a bill in the mail and will pay a higher rate.
Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Marshall Herman says that about 10,000 E-ZPass accounts have been opened in Hampton Roads since Nov. 1. There are about 88,000 total E-ZPass accounts in the region.
On Oct. 31, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that tolls on the Downtown and Midtown tunnels are legally permissible user fees.
