"Dangerous" Berlin Intersection at the Top of SHA's List

Posted:

BERLIN,Md.- A teddy bear and wreath are grim reminders of a life lost in a tragic accident at the Route 113 and Bay Street intersection in Berlin.

Mike Williams, who lives on this corner, use one word to describe this intersection: "dangerous."

"The tire came across the road, come up and hit my truck," said Mike Williams remembers the accident. "It was such an impact."

He said he heard the frightening sounds of screeching metal and cries of help.

"It's just the slamming of metal," said Williams. "The first thing you want to do is see if anybody is hurt."

On November 8th, a boy watched his 16 year-old brother Tymeir Dennis die after a Maryland State trooper struck and kill Tymeir while crossing this street. Now pedestrian safety is on the forefront.

"It's a shame you have to have a memorial at an intersection, where somebody has to be killed in order for them to change the speed limit," said Williams.

Car after car whisks by, some at alarming speeds. Berlin police said there have been 63 car accidents in 13 years, and 24 of them were deadly. But Patricia Dufendach said the devastating death of Tymeir was her breaking point.

"But with the tragic accident of November 8th, I just couldn't sit by anymore," said Dufendach. "I had to get off of my seat, get up and do something."

She got up, started a petition and collected 1,037 signatures within two weeks with the help of her neighbors.

"We don't want it to happen again," said Dufendach. "We don't want anymore deaths on the highway."

State officials said the town could see some safety improvements by the end of January.

It's almost grilling season, but burger sales might not be king this year, as beef prices continue to skyrocket nationwide. With the prices rising so drastically, that opens the door for chicken, which has become the meat of choice for many consumers. On Delmarva, there is no shortage of chicken farms, which means many locally are reaping the benefits of this trend.More

Gov. Martin O'Malley has said he may issue an executive order creating a pilot program for reforms to criminal bail procedures. It would be the next chapter in Maryland's efforts to comply with a Court of Appeals ruling that defendants have a right to legal counsel at every bail hearing. Legislators failed to agree on a solution this past session.
