#8 Maryland Set for ACC Opener at #10 UNC Sunday

Posted:

COLLEGE PARK, Md.– No. 8 Maryland women's basketball will open Atlantic Coast Conference play at No. 10 North Carolina Sunday at 3 p.m. in a televised contest on ESPNU and ESPN3.com.

Live updates will be available at https://twitter.com/umdwbb. The matchup can be heard on the Maryland Sports Radio Network at 1300 AM (Baltimore) and 570 AM (Washington).

The Terrapins (12-1) have won 10 straight games over the last two months. Most recently, the Terps routed College of Charleston, 103-51, Sunday in the Terrapin Classic. With her 28 points and 10 rebounds Sunday, senior Alyssa Thomas became the fifth player in Maryland history – male or female – to break 1,000 rebounds. Just Len Elmore, Crystal Langhorne, Marissa Coleman and Tianna Hawkins have reached that mark. She also notched her 12th straight double-double and 50th of her career to earn the Terrapin Classic MVP honor.

Freshman Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and sophomore Tierney Pfirman were also voted to the Terrapin Classic All-Tournament Team.

Walker-Kimbrough was voted ACC Rookie of the Week Monday for the first time in her career. She came off the bench and provided Maryland a huge spark while averaging 16.0 points in a 2-0 week for the Terrapins. The Aliquippa, Pa., native tied her career-high 17 points in a win over Wofford and 15 points in a win over the College of Charleston. She shot over 55 percent from the field in both games and against the Terriers, she went 4-for-5 from outside the arc.

The Tar Heels (11-2) have won six straight games heading into Sunday's contest. Maryland has won five of the last seven matchups with North Carolina.

The Terrapins are ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press and USA Today National Coaches polls.

After Sunday's game, Maryland will host Wake Forest (9-4) Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in College Park. The Terps-Demon Deacons game will be shown live online for a fee on TerpsTV Premium. As part of social media night, all Twitter, Facebook and Instagram followers can get $2 off tickets.
