DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's women's basketball team dropped a 49-45 decision to Goucher College on Thursday night at Wentworth Gymnasium. The Wolverines fall to 0-7 on the year while the Gophers move to 5-6 overall.
Roniece Williams recorded a double-double 15 points and 12 rebounds and Kiara Johnson added a season-high ten points with five steals but Wesley shot just 26.7% from the field. Brionna Johnson also contributed with eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Trailing 17-9 midway through the first half, the Wolverines came back with a 16-8 run to tie the score with just under two minutes left in the opening period. Nicole Evanko then drilled a triple from the wing with an assist by Brittney Kerns to give Wesley a 28-25 lead at the break.
Williams started the second half strong by scoring six early points as the Wolverines went on a 10-2 run to open the second half. A pair of free throws from Brionna Johnson capped the run, extending Wesley's lead to 38-27 with 13:55 left in regulation.
Goucher then scored 11 straight points over the next five minutes to tie the score and etook the lead with 6:03 left when Amaka Ezeani made a layup to make the score, 44-42.
Wesley's defense helped keep the game close, forcing 30 turnovers on the day, but were unable to overcome the deficit.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday, January 4, when they host Southern Virginia at 1 pm as part of a CAC doubleheader.
