UNDATED (WBOC/AP)- After a storm that brought several inches of snow to parts of the Delmarva Peninsula overnight, roads are being cleared and many schools across the region are closed.

In Delaware, the National Weather Service posted gale warnings in effect along the coast and parts of the Delaware Bay through Friday evening. Winter storm warnings remain in effect statewide. Sussex County received about three inches of snow and four to seven inches fell around the rest of the state.

More than 400 Delaware Department of Transportation employees spent the night plowing and salting roads, and will continue working all day Friday, according to DelDOT spokesman Jim Westhoff. He said residents are urged to stay off the roads if possible, Friday, not only because roads are snow covered, but also because the extremely low temperatures are also a hazard. State of Delaware offices are also closed Friday, with only essential employes required to report.

In Maryland, the State Highway Administration said it continues winter operations as the storm moves out of the region Friday morning. Crews have been out plowing and salting as the year's first winter storm brought between 4 and 8 inches of snow to most of Maryland, SHA said. SHA said motorists should use extreme caution as bitter cold temperatures will turn any wet area to ice.

"The main concern facing motorists this morning is blowing snow that can quickly cover recently plowed lanes," said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  "Motorists need to have realistic expectations and use heightened caution and reduce speeds.  Crews will continue applying chemicals but we warn people that any snow packed areas will be very slow to melt, even with salt or salt brine on the road."
