Snow Covered Rural Wicomico Roads

Posted:

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. - Some of the rural back roads of Wicomico County remained covered with snow and ice Friday morning and afternoon making it difficult for drivers.

Neither rain, sleet nor snow would keep Sandra Saulsbury from her rounds in Mardela Springs.

"We'll get through, someway.  We might not hit all of them.  If we can't hit one, we just bring it back," said Saulsbury.

Saulsbury had to ditch her conventional post office vehicle for a pick up truck on Friday.  The back and front seats were filled with mail and Saulsbury would lean out the front window at each passing mailbox.  Others in the rural parts of Wicomico County said they tried their hardest to avoid the roads at all costs.

"It's hard, you've got to have a four by four vehicle.  You've got to be able to get through the snow.  And without that, you're kinda stuck," said Michelle Seymore of Mardela Springs.

Others who did have to venture out on the roads did so only out of necessity.

"I'm outside today because I just got back from Florida and I have to go to the post office so, I've got to get my car cleaned off," said Harriet Schaffer of Mardela Springs.

And they tried to make the best out of a tough ride.

"I drove to Dover and back today, and I have to go to BWI to pick up my parents tonight and parts of 13 were still definitely really rough," Eva Paxton said. "But it's manageable, I borrowed my mom's SUV so i'm getting around."

It was a day to proceed with caution throughout the county, and with freezing temperatures expected over night, the snow and ice will remain meaning taking it easy on the roads is the safest possible option.
