PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- There were plenty of top finishers for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore indoor track team, but they saved their best performances in two areasthe relays and field events at the UMES Invitational last Saturday at the William P. Hytche Center in their final home meet of the year.
Top finishers in events include Lady Hawk freshmen Shelasia Leitch (Newark, N.J.) in the 60 meter Hurdles and Shauntel Lucious (Newark, N.J.) in the high jump and pole vault.
Senior Aaron Chatman (Waldorf, Md.) took the 200 meter dash for UMES, and the mens 4x400 meter relay team won that race with a team of junior Hakeem Harris (Wilmington, Del.), senior Alonzo Jarmon (Bowie, Md.), freshman Orwell Maylor (St. Catherines, Jamaica), and senior Javon Spencer (Montego Bay, Jamaica). In addition, UMES athletes registered eleven top-three places in various events throughout the day.
While all these athletes excelled in their races, it was the men's field team that impressed the most, sweeping the events of the pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put and weight throw. Junior Yamousa Cisse (Lanham, Md.) won the pole vault with a height of 2.45 meters, and freshman jumper Nicarge Arnold (Castries, St. Lucia) won the long jump with a distance of 7.22 meters, beating out 10 competitors to win that event.
Junior Devin Wynn (Baltimore) took the triple jump with a distance of 14.44 meters, and once again, sophomore Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) excelled in the shot put and weight throw. Simon just missed the school record in the shot put with a throw of 18.11 meters, almost two meters better than the athlete who finished second. Furthermore, Dillon beat out his own record in the weight throw with a distance of 17.28 meters, besting his previous record by half a meter.
The UMES track team will travel to two separate meets in Annapolis this week. The womens indoor track will travel to the womens Navy Invite on Thursday while the mens indoor team will be at the mens Navy Invite on Saturday. The womens meet is slated to begin at 4pm, while the mens meet is listed as TBA.
