Prepping Your Home Ahead of Arctic Blast

BERLIN, Md.- Homeowners across Delmarva are prepping their homes for dangerously cold temperatures.

Joaquin Vila isn't taking any chances when the temps drop into the teens.
He set up an appointment with Austin Cox Home Services. HVAC and plumbing specialists came out to make sure Vila's heating system was working properly.

"We want to make sure that if the system stops working, or we get temperatures too low inside the house, then [pipes won't freeze] which is a big concern, " Vila said.

Vila's concern about frozen pipes is common to households across Delmarva.
Billy Hill, a plumbing service technician and supervisor, offers advice on ways to protect it.

"If you do have pipes that are in doubt, that you're afraid might freeze, you can put heat trace on them," Hill said.

Specialists say another way to make sure your home is safe is to seal all access doors.
Keeping them closed will protect the pipes underneath your house.

Joshua Brunstetter, an HVAC specialist, took a look at Vila's furnace.
He also checked the gas pressure and filter.
He says homeowners tend to overlook that part of the house, which can be problematic.

"If things go unnoticed, it has the tendency to cause other issues, and it can be very costly for the homeowner to repair them."

High cost that people like Vila want to avoid.
