Fire Destroys Home in Dorchester County

Updated:

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Authorities are investigating an early Tuesday fire that left a Dorchester County home in ruins.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office said the three-alarm blaze occurred at around 2:30 a.m. at an unoccupied three story home located at 5100 Ragged Point Road outside of Cambridge.

It took 50 firefighters from area fire companies approximately one hour to get the fire under control. There were no reported injuries. Investigators said the fire caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage to the structure and another $500,000 to its contents.

A smoke alarm was present but investigators are not sure if it operated. They said a fire alarm was also present, however it did not operate due to phone service cut off during a weather event.

The cause of the fire and its area of origin remain under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Lower Eastern Regional Office of the State Fire Marshal at (410) 713-3780.

Gov. Martin O'Malley has said he may issue an executive order creating a pilot program for reforms to criminal bail procedures. It would be the next chapter in Maryland's efforts to comply with a Court of Appeals ruling that defendants have a right to legal counsel at every bail hearing. Legislators failed to agree on a solution this past session.
