2 Watermen Charged in Rockfish Bust

DUNDALK, Md. (AP) - Maryland Natural Resources Police say they've charged two watermen with overharvesting rockfish or striped bass on the Patapsco River.

Police say 53-year-old Terry Myrick of Baltimore and 37-year-old John Messinger of Middle River were charged Monday and are accused of exceeding their daily allotment by 532 pounds. Each faces fines of more than $400,000 and their licenses could be revoked.

When officers checked on New Year's Day, they noticed the men were nearing their limit and another net was nearby. Police say officers set up surveillance and later found the men were over their limit. The catch was seized and sold.

Myrick and Messinger were charged with exceeding the daily common pool catch limit and exceeding the common pool fishery boat limit.
