BALTIMORE– After winning its second title in four seasons with a 12-5 victory over Trinity (Conn.) College in the 2013 NCAA national championship, the Salisbury University women's lacrosse team opens the 2014 schedule as No. 1 in the Lacrosse Magazine NCAA Division III Women's Preseason Top 20 poll, the organization announced Thursday morning.
SU carries a 23-game winning streak into the season after holding a perfect 23-0 record through 2013. Led by two-time IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year and All-American Ashton Wheatley, and All-America selections Bethany Baer and Meghan Toomey, the Gulls work toward another successful year on the field.
The top five also includes No. 2 State University of New York at Cortland, who fell to No. 3 Trinity in the semifinals last season. Following in at No. 4 and 5 are Middlebury College and Franklin & Marshall College, respectively, after both being eliminated late in the NCAA tournament in 2013 by Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls head into a 2014 schedule that accumulates eight teams posted in the top-20 poll, including No. 2 Cortland, No. 3 Trinity, No. 5 Franklin & Marshall, No. 7 The College of New Jersey, No. 8 Colby College, No. 12 York College of Pennsylvania, No. 16 Christopher Newport University, and No. 20 Stevenson University.
