Wicomico County Shelter Gives Away Free Coats to Needy Families

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md.-Some families in Wicomico county were a little warmer on Thursday thanks to the Christian Shelter giving away free coats, gloves and hats to anyone who needed them, for free.

Michelle Fields and her fiance were one of many families loading up on coats.

"I have a six -year-old and a three-year old and they are the love of my life," said Fields.

And just like any parent, Fields said she would do anything for the welfare of her young children, adding that there is no shame in taking advantage of something like this.

"I am just trying to be a better mom that some people don't even have," she said,  "so as long as my kids have something to be warm in then I am fine, that is all I need."

Latisha Paul with the shelter said that the tradition started with a small coat drive last year. Then this year the demand went up and donations kept coming in.

Paul said that's when the shelter started working with the program called, One Warm Coat.

"Temperatures with the way they have been and with the snow that surprised us and children having to stay home, it would just terrify me to know that a child doesn't have a coat in this weather," said Paul.

Having a coat was a key winter essential that Mellissa Reed said she needed desperately.

"It was the only one I had," she explained, "I was at the courthouse, left it on the bench and when I came back it was gone."

Donald Jackson said that struggling to find a job and making sure he has food to eat is stressful enough and suffering in the cold shouldn't be one.

"Some people just can't go out and afford to buy a coat," Jackson said, "beggars can't be choosers and I am not choosy because if I can get a coat then I am going to get it."

The One Warm Coat campaign runs through April. The next giveaway is next Thursday on Barclay Street.

The shelter will continue to take donations at anytime.
