Former Va. Solicitor General Rejoins Law Firm

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former Virginia Solicitor General E. Duncan Getchell is back for his third stint at the McGuireWoods law firm.

The firm says Getchell has returned as partner and senior litigator after four years as Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's top deputy. Cuccinelli's term ends Saturday after his unsuccessful run for governor.

Getchell was an architect of the first lawsuit challenging the 2010 federal health care overhaul. A judge declared a key provision unconstitutional, but the ruling was overturned on appeal.

In the U.S. Supreme Court, Getchell successfully argued that it's legal for Virginia to limit use of its Freedom of Information Act to its own residents.

Getchell worked at McGuireWoods in 1974, then served two years as an Air Force lawyer. He returned to McGuireWoods in 1977 and remained until joining Cuccinelli.
