ANNAPOLIS, Md.-— The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's indoor track team participated in the first of two meets at the Naval Academy this week, and in the process scored several victories.

Competing in both track and field events, the Lady Hawks managed first place finishes in the 500 meter run, the 4x400 meter relay, and the triple jump, and a second place finish in the 200 meter dash. Evelyn Chappell, a freshman from (Bowie, Md.), earned a second place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.14 seconds. Chappell, who has competed in the 200 meter dash and the high jump so far this season, has earned top three finishes in both events this year. Along with the Navy race, Evelyn has earned a 3rd place finish in the 200 meter at the UMES Invitational last week, and three top two finishes in the high jump, one in each of the meets prior to the trip at Navy.

The UMES first place winner in the 500 meter run is junior Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who finished with a time of 1:17.21. Mars also earned a third place finish in the 500 meter run in the Navy Lid-Lifter last December. Annis has also competed in the relay and the 200 meter dash over the course of the season. Another UMES top finisher was the 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.), sophomore Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine's, Jamaica), sophomore Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, Md.), and Annis Mars. The team finished the relay with a time of 3:57.96, ahead of seven other teams from three different schools.

This is the first time these specific individuals have competed as one relay team, but they finished with the second best time of all UMES relay teams during the indoor track season. Graduate student Geranda Williams (Waldorf, Md.) registered her first top finish of the year with her distance of 11.42 meters in the triple jump. Williams holds the school record in the triple jump at 11.74 meters, which she set back in 2011. Despite her top finish, her best distance is actually 11.43 meters, which earned her a second place finish at the UMES Invitational.

The men's indoor track team will travel to the Naval Academy this Saturday for the men's portion of the Navy Invitational. The women's team will travel alongside the men to participate in the Great Dane Classic in New York City on the 17th of January.
