DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - Volunteer fire companies across the country, and on Delmarva will be spared the Affordable Care Act's employer mandate.
There was concern volunteer firefighters would be considered employees, meaning departments with more than 50 would need to provide health insurance. Lawmakers, including Delaware's senators, pushed the Treasury Department to look at the problem.
In a letter sent to Sen. Chris Coons today, the department announced it would take corrective action.
There are about 6,000 volunteer firefighters in Delaware.
