At 5:30 on Friday night, Wicomico (8-3, 6-1) is scheduled to travel a few miles across town to take on Bayside South and city rival J.M. Bennett (6-5, 4-2). Now, Wicomico will have to play that game without leading scorer and star guard Larry Ennis.
On Friday afternoon, a source said that the senior shooting guard and Harford CC commit, Ennis, had been suspended from the team and school for vandalism of school property.
Shortly after that, Ennis tweeted from his account (@Blaze_Laa) separate tweets that said:
"Really wanna cry!!!"
"Im not playing tonight!!!"
After calls to head coach Butch Waller went unanswered, a member of the Wicomico coaching staff cleared the air in a text message saying, "[Ennis is] not kicked off, but is suspended from the school for a day. [Ennis] can't play again until February 4th."
This means that, along with tonight's game against J.M. Bennett, Ennis will miss home games against Delmar (Del.), Stephen Decatur, Crisfield, and an away game at Pocomoke. With Ennis slated to return to the team on February 4th, he will make his post-suspension debut in game at Washington high in Princess Anne, Md on that day.
This is Ennis' second suspension of the season after being suspended for two games for his actions after Wicomico's loss to Edmondson at the Governor's Challenge. Wicomico lost both games without Ennis, losing 64-44 to Oakdale and 81-69 to Washington.
Ennis is averaging just less than 30 points-per-game this season and without him, Wicomico will have a tough time winning the majority of those five games.
