DOVER, Del. (AP/WBOC)- A winter storm bearing down on the East Coast has forced early closing of schools and government offices in Delaware.

National Weather Service forecasters said the storm could bring more than a foot of snow to parts of the mid-Atlantic region.

Several school districts in Delaware scheduled early dismissals Tuesday, and state government offices were to close at noon.

As snow began falling in northern Delaware late Tuesday morning, Delaware Department of Transportation officials advised residents to avoid driving if possible.

Officials say crews pretreated roads with brine on Monday to help reduce ice and snow buildup, and crews will try to stay ahead of any snow accumulation on major roads Tuesday by plowing and applying salt. Approximately 400 pieces of equipment will be working during the storm, DeDLOT said.

Residents are urged to avoid driving unless necessary. If drivers encounter a plow, stay back at least 1,000 feet from the rear of the plow, and never pass a plow if its blade is down.

Residents are also reminded that in case of significant weather events, the state of Delaware has a system of driving restrictions, with varying levels of restrictions, depending on the severity of the situation.
