WILMINGTON, Del. (WBOC/AP)- Delaware Gov. Jack Markell has declared a limited state of emergency as a winter storm brought snow and high winds to the East Coast.
The governor's declaration was effective as of 2 p.m. Tuesday. It included an official warning that motorists must use extra caution, and that nonessential government and private sector employees should stay off the roads if possible.
"We strongly encourage drivers who do not need to travel to delay or refrain from being on the road," Markell said. "Conditions have deteriorated, and it is safer not to drive if you don't have to. DelDOT crews are continuing to work on clearing roads and we will continue to evaluate conditions."
The declaration also authorizes the Delaware National Guard to assist local authorities with any precautionary or responsive actions if directed by the state emergency management director, in consultation with the Secretary of Department of Safety and Homeland Security.
