GEORGETOWN, Del. - In extremely cold weather one problem homeowners might face is freezing pipes. At Megee, a plumbing company based in Georgetown, plumbers expect 20 or more emergency calls a day during freezing temperatures.

Clay Hastings has been a plumber with Megee for seven years and is very busy fixing frozen pipes when temperatures drop.

"There are some homes we have to replace all the piping, underneath the home, up into the homes," he said. "Because when they freeze sometimes they will freeze throughout the whole house."

According to Hastings, there are several ways to prevent your pipes from freezing. He explained that you can have heat lamps, heat tape and insulation to keep the piping warm. Also, he recommended detaching any outdoor hoses.

This winter has been unusually cold, therefore many Delaware residents were not as prepared as they could be.

"It caught everyone off guard with the bad weather, single digit temperatures, things like that," Hastings said. "People aren't prepared for that low of a temperature around here."

Milton resident Trent Willey did not even consider his pipes freezing.

"I just figured like with the heat going and everything... I wouldn't have to worry about it really," he said.

So for those who weren't prepared, fortunately the plumbers are.
