NEWPORT NEWS, Va.– The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's indoors track team won the 4x400 relay race at the Captains Invite.
The unit also added a few top 3 finishes to their weekend resume' at Christopher Newport University. Freshman Shelasia Leitch earned her marks during the pentathlon. In the 4x400, freshman Rachel Halmon, sophomore Shantol Hemley, junior Gayon Evans, and freshman Taylor Folk finished first with a time of 3:56.46 beating six schools in the process.
The UMES B team boasted a solid finish as well, junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis, freshman Jasmine Sampson, senior Latasha Moore, and sophomore Jheniel Kelly finished third with a time of 4:02.32
The Hawks faired well individually as well. Sampson had a fifth place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:00.79), Hemley placed second in the 1000 meter dash (3:07.65).
In the 800-meter run, Kelly, Wilmot-Francis, and junior Annis Mars finished third-fifth respectively.
In the field events freshmen Shauntel Licious and Evelyn Chappell earned high marks at the high jump. Lucious finished third with a height of 1.63 meters, Chappell finished fourth with a height of 1.58 meters. Nancy Yao posted a season-best distance of 10,75 in the triple jump to seal a fifth place finish.
This was the last meet that the men and women will compete separately. The two units are preparing to travel to New York on Saturday for the Columbia Meet.
