Snowstorm Blankets Southeast Va., Road Crews Busy

Posted: Updated:

NORFOLK, Va. (AP)- State and local crews have been working to clear Virginia roads from snow that has been falling since Tuesday afternoon.

About a foot of snow was expected to accumulate in the southern part of Hampton Roads through Wednesday.

School districts canceled classes, government offices shut down and thousands of sailors at the region's Navy bases were told to stay home on Wednesday unless they're considered essential personnel.

The National Weather Service says the Norfolk area averages fewer than three days of snow each winter that result in at least an inch of accumulation. Wednesday marks the fourth day in less than two weeks that at least an inch of snow has fallen.

Many grocery and hardware stores in Hampton Roads were out of snowstorm provisions before nightfall Tuesday.
