Delaware's Inland Bays Ice Over After Mild Winters

DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) - Rehoboth and Little Assawoman bays have been icing over after years of mild winters in southern Delaware.

Marine science Professor Charles Epifanio tells The Daily Times that the bays used to freeze over more often when periods of cold weather lasted longer. In 1976, large parts of the bays froze over completely.

Roy Miller of the Center for Inland Bays says this year's deep freeze doesn't pose a threat to most aquatic life. He says most animals can easily adapt. But bay wildlife may have more difficulty finding food if the ice persists for weeks.

Some species are susceptible to cold if they can't move, such as mussels and barnacles. While some might be killed, scientists say it opens up space for new colonies in the spring.
