WILMINGTON, Del.- AAA Mid-Atlantic said Monday that in the January it saw requests for emergency roadside service climb to record numbers.

The auto club said emergency roadside assistance volume topped 222,000 for the month, the highest monthly volume on record, shattering the previous record month of December 2010 by nearly 16,000. In addition, AAA Mid-Atlantic daily average requests for emergency roadside assistance topped nearly 7,200 in January, up from an average of 5,900 per day the January before last.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, the auto club has worked around the clock for nearly the entire month of January to not only help motorists crippled by the snow (25.9 inches in Philadelphia in January), but especially those whose car batteries weren't strong enough to handle the extended record-breaking cold that blanketed the Mid-Atlantic several times in January.

"With February picking up where January left off, drivers should make sure their vehicles are prepared with proper levels of antifreeze, a strong battery, and plenty of windshield washer fluid," said Jim Lardear, director of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. "Also keep an emergency kit in the trunk should you run into any problems during your commute. Careful preparation is the key to weathering the wrath of Old Man Winter."
