Stormy Winter Draws Down Md. Salt Stockpile

Posted: Updated:

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP)- The Maryland State Highway Administration says a high number of winter storm threats this season has drawn down the state's road salt stockpile to a less-than-ideal level.

With another storm approaching Tuesday night, spokesman David Buck says the statewide stockpile is at 76 percent of capacity. He says there's no shortage, but the agency hasn't had time to replenish the supply after a storm Sunday night and Monday.

Buck says the agency generally likes to start a storm activation with its salt domes averaging at least 80 percent full.

Buck says the drawdown reflects the frequency of winter weather threats this season. He says the agency has activated storm crews in the Baltimore-Washington area 25 times since late November.
