Ocean City Police Warn of Cellphone Scam

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md.– An international cellphone scam may impact people living on Delmarva.

Ocean City police are warning people to not answer their cellphones if they do not recognize the numbers.

Police said potential victims receive a "one ring" call from an area code in the Caribbean Islands.

Area codes to look out for include 473, 809, 876, 284, and 268.

According to the Better Business Bureau, scammers use auto-dialers to call thousands of cellphones. The phone will ring once and then disconnect. If the victim returns the call, he or she will be charged $19.95 for an international call fee and an additional $9-per-minute charge.
