WESTMINSTER, Md. – Tim Stewart scored a game-best 15 points as host McDaniel downed visiting Washington, 74-42, on Thursday night at the Gill Center in a Centennial Conference men's basketball contest. The Green Terror improve to 15-5 overall and 10-3 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen drop to 5-15 and 4-9 respectively.
McDaniel scored the game's first six points to take a 6-0 lead with 14:54 left in the first half on an Evan Pupelis layup. The Shoremen scored the next four points to cut the McDaniel lead to 6-4 with 12:29 remaining in the first on a lay-in by sophomore forward Pat Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) before the Green Terror went on a 14-0 run to take a 20-4 lead with 7:32 left on a bunny by Jimmy Cranwell. A Pupelis layup with 35 seconds left in the opening half gave McDaniel its biggest lead of the half at 34-13 and would take a 34-15 lead into halftime.
The Green Terror outscored the Shoremen in the second half by a 40-29 margin. McDaniel's 32 point lead at the end of the game was the team's largest lead of the night.
McDaniel, which held a 33-32 edge in rebounds, shot 60% from the floor (30-for-60), 39% from three-point range (5-for-13) and 60% from the foul line (9-for-15). Wesley Brooks had six rebounds and two steals to tie for game-high and lead the hosts, while Philip Perry and Cameron Royster had four assists to lead all players. The Green Terror outscored the Shoremen 42-20 in points in the paint and committed only 10 turnovers, while forcing 14 turnovers from the Shoremen.
Washington shot 26% from the floor (14-for-53), 7% from three-point territory (1-for-15) and 81% from the charity stripe (13-for-16). Morgan scored 13 points to lead the guests and was one of three players to grab six rebounds to lead the team and tie for the most in the game. Joining Morgan with six rebounds from the Shoremen were senior forward Tony Hawkins (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Haddon Memorial) and sophomore forward Dave Knox (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South). Hawkins and junior guard Sean Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) each had two steals to tie for tops in the contest.
The Shoremen are back on the court Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when they travel to Franklin & Marshall for a Centennial Conference game.
