Virginia Republicans Demand Investigation for Appointment

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Republicans want an investigation into Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe's appointment of a longtime GOP operative to the state Alcoholic Beverage Control board.

Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Pat Mullins asked the attorney general's office Thursday to investigate the appointment of Boyd Marcus. The attorney general swiftly turned them down.

A longtime Republican aide, Marcus shocked political watchers last year by endorsing McAuliffe and working on his campaign.

Campaign finance reports, first reported by The Associated Press, show that Marcus was paid $140,000 for campaign consulting work.

His new position as chairman of the ABC board pays $130,000 a year.

A spokesman for Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring says his office isn't aware of any wrongdoing by McAuliffe that would warrant an investigation.
