SALISBURY, Md.- An early Friday house fire in Salisbury has left a man dead and his wife in critical condition.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office identified the couple as 66-year-old William Holbrook Jr. and 41-year-old Mary Holbrook.

The blaze, which was reported shortly before 5 p.m. at 413 Patrick Ave., brought nearly 25 firefighters from Salisbury Stations #16, #2, #1 and Delmar Fire Department to the scene.

Investigators said the two victims were found unconscious in the smoke-filled structure and brought outside to waiting EMS personnel. Both victims were transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center by ambulance where William Holbrook succumbed to injuries received during
the fire. The second victim, Mary Holbrook, remains in the intensive care unit of the hospital where she is listed in critical condition.

Firefighters got blaze under control within 1 hour and 45 minutes. The couple's pet dog and cat perished in the fire.

The neighbor occupying the second half of the duplex was alerted to the fire by his smoke
alarm. Investigators said an initial effort was made to reach the victims but heavy smoke made the task to difficult.

The neighbor, Francisco Figueroa, is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Authorities said the dwelling is a one-story duplex owned by Milford Twilley Rentals.

Investigators determined the fire originated in the master bedroom and caused an estimated $80,000 in damage to the structure and contents. The Wicomico County Bureau of
Investigation is assisting with the death investigation. The cause of the fire remains under
investigation.
