CHESTERTOWN, Md.- The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association accounced the preseason edition of its NCAA Division III coaches' poll Monday afternoon and Washington College check in at ninth in the poll.
The Shoremen finished last season 13-5 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial Conference. Washington made its 30th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, defeating Colorado College, 10-7, in the first round before falling to eventual NCAA Division III National Champion Stevenson in the second round. The Shoremen were ranked as high as fourth in the nation in Division III during the regular season and wrested the Charles B. Clark Cup away from archrival Salisbury University with a 7-6 win over the Sea Gulls in the annual "War on the Shore" rivalry game.
The Shoremen are joined in the 20-team rankings by two other Centennial Conference schools: Dickinson (seventh) and Gettysburg (20th). Three of the Shoremen's 2014 non-conference opponents also appear on the list: Salisbury (fifth), Washington and Lee (14th), and St. Mary's (18th). Another Centennial Conference school (Franklin & Marshall) and another of the Shoremen's non-conference opponents (Ohio Wesleyan) also received votes in the poll but were not ranked.
Washington was also ranked ninth in Division III by Lacrosse Magazine and 10th by Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Yearbook. The Shoremen will open their 2014 season February 22nd with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Goucher.
