SHA to Upgrade Route 113 & Bay Street Intersection
BERLIN, Md.- Flowers and a cross are grim reminders of a tragic November night. Tymier Dennis, 16, of Berlin, was killed in a car accident in Berlin. Patricia Dufendach said his death was her breaking point.
"It's heartbreaking," said Dufendach. "Its just a sad story. That I'm glad we were able to do something about it. So I won't happen in the future. And that's the motivation you don't want it to happen in the future."
More than a thousand people have rallied behind Dufendach in a petition that demands State Highway officials for change.
"If we can respond to the to the death of a child and the pain that the community field," said Dufendach. "Especially these parents. If we can respond to that if we can't respond to that what are we as a society."
State Highway officials said change will come: new sidewalks, crosswalks, lights and a lower speed limit are in the works for this intersection.
"I wish it would have been done earlier. And I wish this whole thing could have been spared. But it wasn't and the only thing they can do forward is say you know what this isn't going to happen again in my watch. "
Berlin police say there have been 63 car accidents in 13 years-- and 24 of them were deadly. Some people hope these changes will lower those numbers and safe a life.
"I hope the family can take some comfort. As cold as that comfort maybe that the comfort that there are purpose. That we can turn in horrible thing into a positive thing."
