Lady Hawks Return Home to Face Bison and Bears

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- On Saturday, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team returns to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center to face Howard University for 2014 Homecoming. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. On Feb. 17, the Lady Hawks host the Lady Bears of Morgan State University. Game-time is slated for 5:30 p.m. (EST)

LAST TIMEOUT


Last Monday (02/10), Maryland Eastern Shore fell to Hampton University, 54-35, despite hanging tough with the conference elite team. Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) nailed a three ball to open the second half, 32-20, but the Lady Pirates were in control as they went on an 11-2 run and held their biggest lead of the contest, 43-22, with less than 13 minutes in regulation. Within the next five minutes, UMES narrowed the deficit to 14, 45-31, but Hampton closed the game on a 9-4 run to win, 54-35.

TOP PERFORMERS

In that contest, Sweeney notched a team-high 15 points while freshman Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) added eight points and three boards. Other notable Hawk performances included sophomore Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) grabbing a new career-high 13 boards whereas sophomore Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) recorded 10 rebounds in a losing effort.

MATCHUP PREVIEWS


Entering Saturday's game, Howard leads the all-time series, 53-13, including last month's overtime victory over UMES, 77-75. In the last meeting, Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) paced the Hawk attack, scoring a game-high 21 points. Claybrooks recorded a double-double off the bench, 14 points and 14 boards, while Sweeney and Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) combined for 18 points in a losing effort. For Howard, Shavonne Duckett tallied a double-
double, 19 points and 13 rebounds, whereas Ta'Shya Heslip registered 18 points, nine boards, and eight assists in the victory.

Since then, the Lady Bison comes in 10-13 overall (6-4 MEAC) and sixth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings. Heslip leads the team in scoring (13.5) while dishing out five helpers-per-game, which is tied for second in the conference. Gonzalez ranks among the top shot-blockers in the MEAC, posting 1.6 blocks-per-game, while averaging 11.4 points-per-contest.

For Monday (02/17), Morgan State enters 2-21 (0-10 MEAC) on the season and last in the conference standings, including a 76-60 lost to in-town rival, Coppin State University. Dating back to the 1981-82 season, Maryland Eastern Shore leads the all-time series, 39-32. Last season, the Lady Bears won the previous meeting, 56-49, at the MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Va. In that contest, Sweeney had a team-high 15 points while Claybrooks added eight points and 11 boards in the loss.

This season, MSU is led by junior guard Tracy Carrington. Carrington, a 2013-14 MEAC Women's Basketball Preseason Third Team selection, averages 21.2 points-per-game (PPG), which second in the conference behind Florida A&M's Jasmine Grice. Other notable Lady Bears include Danielle Forrest and Ivy Harrington.

For UMES, the Lady Hawks come in 5-16 overall (1-8 MEAC) and eleventh in the MEAC standings. Long leads the Lady Hawks in multiple categories, including points (14.9), assists (4.5), and minutes (29.3), while Sweeney ranks among the top sharpshooters in the country, averaging 2.9 three-pointers-per-game.
