LEWES, Del.- Beebe Medical Center has reached a settlement in a lawsuit involving the death of a Sussex County teenager.

In May 2011,  14-year-old Christina Atkins, of Milton, died following an incident where her family says she had a medical emergency while trapped inside a locked bathroom at the Lewes hospital.

According to court records, staff at Beebe had trouble finding a key for the bathroom and by the time they did, it was too late. Christina died a few days later.

In a statement, the hospital said, "The parties have amicably resolved the case to everyone's mutual satisfaction." Terms of the settlement were not released.

Beebe also said that immediately after the incident changes were made to ensure immediate access to locked bathrooms in the event of an emergency at the hospital.
