Bethany Streetscape Construction Back After Delays

BETHANY BEACH, Del. - Construction has started up again on the Bethany Beach streetscape project after delays caused by cold weather.

The project has a deadline of Memorial Day, and some people are worried it will not be complete by then.

The city along with DelDOT are redoing the sidewalks on Garfield Parkway from Route 1 to the boardwalk to make them safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

According to Brad Sabario of DelDOT, the construction is required to be completed by Memorial Day and he thinks they are on the right track. He said there currently is two weeks of float time to use for any future delays. Bad weather can still potentially delay construction.

Part-time Bethany Beach resident Angela Schaab hopes the construction will be done in time for summer.

"If it's not, Bethany Beach has a very very difficult parking situation as it is," she said. "So it's going to be very interesting to see how many people are very frustrated driving around looking for parking spaces."

Schaab also said she is optimistic that the project will finish by the deadline.

Karen Heikes however, who works at Bethany's "Sea Crest," is not as positive.

"It's a mess and we're all hoping they get it done on time because with the cold weather they haven't been working on it a lot, it seemed like they weren't even working on it this afternoon," she explained. "I'mm afraid they're not gonna have it done in time."

For businesses in the area, having ample space for pedestrians to walk around is key in the busy summer months.

"It'll be a real pain for the business owners," Heikes said. "Memorial Day is when they really kick off the season so it'll just make everything really bad."

But Memorial Day is still 96 days away, and Bethany Beach residents are hoping that's enough to finish the $2.4 million streetscape project.
