Atlantic General Hospital Introduces Telemedicine

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md.- If you are a parent of a child with developmental disabilities, you know how challenging it can be to care for them.

It can also be difficult finding the right doctor to help.

That is also the case with Connie West, of Salisbury, who said that parenting for her is anything but normal.

"He is non-stop, he is looking for something to eat, he's looking for something to drink, he's going into the dishwasher trying to unload it, climbing the stove trying to get into the microwave," West said. Those not so typical behaviors are what describe her 4-year-old son's autism that keeps West busy around the clock.

Adding to the challenge is the time it takes for her to travel from Salisbury to the other side of the bridge for her son's treatment.

"The long-awaited appointment time, how long before we see the doctor, how long before we go get evaluated, how long before we can eat, all of that comes into play on a day of travel," West said.

But things are now a lot less hectic thanks to Telemedicine at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin. The technology is part of a partnership with the Kennedy Krieger Institution in Baltimore that offers care using remote tele-video conferencing equipment.

"It allows for audio and video on both sides of the appointment, so we can move the cameras from this site to the Kennedy Krieger doctors and show anything they want to show the patient and vice versa," said, hospital director, Deborah Wolf.

Virginia Harris of Berlin and her son were part of Friday's program test, demonstrating the technology.

Harris said she is thankful that her son is healthy.

"It was comforting knowing that," Harris said, "but I do feel bad for the parents who do have to deal with the process of mental health because it is frustrating."

Wolf said that the hospital is the first hospital in the country to implement this program.
