Winds Destroy Home in Caroline County

PRESTON, Md. - Heavy winds destroyed 66-year-old Morris Hicks' home near Preston in under one minute.

Friday's gusts were so strong his home lifted off the foundation. Hicks, who has suffered two strokes, was sitting on his couch when his windows blew in, tearing his house apart.

"It was really loud, the windows started coming in, the air conditioner came in," he said. "Then I got scared."

His son, Michael Hicks, had just pulled into the driveway and watched the whole thing from the outside.

"Out of the corner of my eye, the front porch lifted up over the house and went behind the house," he explained. "Then it was over with in half a minute."

Hicks' kitchen and living room had the worst of the damage. Two sliding glass doors flew off and items from inside the home blew outdoors.

Hicks doesn't want this to be the end of the home he's lived in since 1966.

"I hope they fix it, I want to move back in, I don't want to leave," he lamented. "I've been here all these years I might as well stay here now."

He says he hopes his insurance policy will cover the repairs. For now, the Red Cross is putting him up at a motel.
