HARRINGTON, Del.- Authorities say a Harrington man was arrested for his 4th DUI offense early Sunday morning after he sideswiped a police car.

According to Delaware State Police, an officer from the Harrington Police Department was parked on the southbound side of Railroad Avenue, just north of the Commerce Street intersection at approximately 1:35 a.m. Sunday. Police said Thomas J. Lepera, 47, was driving a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe southbound on Railroad Avenue, when he sideswiped the officer's fully-marked patrol vehicle. Police said Lepera continued heading southbound before turning onto Commerce Street and coming to a stop after the officer activated his emergency equipment to get him to pull over.

Troopers were called to the scene to investigate the crash, and reported detecting an odor of alcohol upon making contact with Lepera. Lepera was taken into custody following a DUI investigation. Police said Lepera's previous DUI convictions occurred on Jan. 10, 2001, March 9, 2004 and Aug. 1, 2006.

In addition to 4th offense DUI, Lepera was also charged with careless driving. He was ordered held in the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in default of $4,025 secured bond.
