DOVER, Del.- Public health officials say a 33-year-old woman with the flu died days after her child was delivered by emergency Caesarian section.

The Delaware Health and Social Services said Tuesday that the woman, who lived in Smyrna, had several underlying health conditions. Officials said she was in her second trimester and first sought medical treatment for an illness on Feb. 11.

Health officials said tests confirmed the woman was positive for influenza H1N1. The woman was hospitalized with severe respiratory distress on Feb. 16.

Officials said the woman's child was delivered on Feb. 17. The woman died on Feb. 22.

The infant remains hospitalized.

Health officials say the woman's death is the third this season from the flu in Delaware. They noted that a 77-year-old Wilmington man was the state's second flu death when he died Feb. 21 while hospitalized. He had several underlying medical conditions, officials said.
