Gov. Says House GOP Unwilling to Negotiate

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe says Republicans in the House of Delegates are refusing to negotiate, and their intransigence is threatening the state's economy.

In remarks to reporters Tuesday at the Capitol following a meeting with senior lawmakers over the budget, McAuliffe said he's baffled by House Republicans' refusal to discuss expanding Medicaid eligibility to about 400,000 low-income residents.

McAuliffe said all of the Republicans' concerns about an expansion have been "knocked down."

House Republicans have said the state's Medicaid program needs to be reformed before any large-scale expansion is contemplated. They have also insisted that any proposed expansion should be debated outside the budget process.

McAuliffe also said that lawmakers' complaints about his negotiating style sometimes make him feel like he's "in the middle of a sorority house."
