Snow Delays Start of Del. Capital Budget Hearings

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP)- A winter storm has postponed the start of hearings by the legislative committee charged with writing Delaware's annual capital improvement budget.

The committee was scheduled to convene Monday for four days of agency-by-agency hearings on Gov. Jack Markell's proposed $461 million capital budget for the fiscal year starting July 1.

But the snowstorm forced the closing of state government offices and the General Assembly.

House Majority Leader Valerie Longhurst also postponed a community meeting Monday night to discuss safety issues related to rail shipments to the Delaware City refinery.

Markell's budget proposal includes about $93 million for school construction and renovation, and $207 million for transportation projects.

The state education department and the judicial branch are among the government units whose capital budgets that were set to be discussed Monday.
